The IBSD, a national institute under the department of biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Meghalaya government in this regard recently, a statement issued by the organisation said here.
The main mandate of institute is "the development of bioresources and their sustainable use through biotechnological interventions for the socio-economic growth of the north eastern region."
The two branches of the institute will function from Shillong and Tura.
It would also undertake human resources development for sustainable utilisation of bioresources for creation of jobs and economic development, Sahoo said.
"We are grateful to Mukul M Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and the officers of the Departments of Agriculture and Urban Affairs who have provided critical support t for the operationalisation of IBSD Meghalaya," he added.
Realising the importance of the rich biodiversity and bioresources of the North East region, the central government had set up the IBSD in Imphal in 2001.
