Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today began webcasting of its channel Gyandarshan which would facilitate students to access the varsity's programmes across the world.
The Gyandarshan programmes can be accessed at www.ignouonline.ac.in/gyandarshan, a statement issued by the varsity said.
IGNOU Vice Chancellor Ravindra Kumar said it was a major step forward in implementing the education through electronic media.
"We are a digital and open university now. There is no distance between us and our learners," Kumar said after the launch.
Talking about the kind of programmes that would be telecast, IGNOU Director of Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC) Kapil Kumar said, "We will use the platform as a promotional tool for our country's cultural awareness and empowerment on a variety of themes on issues and challenges related to societal development, cultural heritage, environment etc."
This channel will also serve the Indian diaspora not only for promoting Indian culture but also enlightening them with contemporary achievements of India.
A Facebook page -- EMPC IGNOU -- was also launched on the occasion. It is aimed at providing regular updates on Indian education and also as a platform that seeks feedback from the learners from across the world.
IGNOU already has the platform of GyanVani through which interactive radio counselling programmes are broadcast and webcast.
