West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of legendary footballer P K Banerjee on Friday, saying it was an immense loss for the country.

She said the death of Banerjee was an irreparable loss for the world of sports.

Recalling that Banerjee had been honoured with 'Bangabibhusan' by the state in 2013, the chief minister said he had also got the Arjuna award, Padmashree, 'Fifa Order of Merit' to name a few.

"I convey my heartfelt condolence and sympathy to the bereaved family at this hour of grief," she said.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar also mourned the death and recalled his visit to meet the ailing football legend at the hospital a few days back.

"Deeply condole demise of legendary footballer and Olympian PK Banerjee," he tweeted.

"Pray ALMIGHTY to bestow eternal peace on departed soul and courage to his family, friends and numerous fans to bear this loss," Dhankhar added.

P K Banerjee, a footballing colossus of his time, died here on Friday aged 83, having dribbled and dazzled for a good part of his mind-boggling 51 years of service to the game.

He was suffering from respiratory problems due to pneumonia and had an underlying history of Parkinson's disease, dementia and heart problems.
