Arumugam Velmurugan, 28, admitted to aggressively grabbing the shirt of Bangladeshi Ahsan Habib Md Fazlan Rahman on March 5 at Homestay Residences.
The incident happened when Habib went to confront Arumugam's friend, Indian national Dharmaraj Ramesh, 25, who had thrown a beer can at him in a canteen at the dormitory.
The incident sparked a confrontation which snowballed into a brawl, Channel News Asia reported.
Arumugam was unrepresented and had sought leniency from the court, telling District Judge Toh Yung Cheong that it was his birthday today and that he supported his aged and ill father in India with his daily income of USD 25.
His sentence was backdated to April 18.
Velmurugam is the second man, among 17 who face charges for the fight, to admit his guilt.
Ramesh pleaded guilty on April 15 and was sentenced to two weeks in jail.
The cases of fifteen other men are pending in court, a report by The Straits Times said today.
