Constable Deepak Yadav (25) took the extreme step by shooting himself with his service rifle while he was out on patrolling with his colleagues last night in Manpur police station limits, Rajnandgaon Additional Superintendent of Police (anti-Naxal operations) Y P Singh said.
The patrolling team was carrying its operation close to its camp in Manpur area, located around 200 km away from here.
Yadav suddenly fired at himself following which his colleagues rushed him to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead, the official said.
The exact reason which prompted him to take the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, Singh said.
A case has been registered in this connection, he said, adding further probe was on.
