Congress President Sonia Gandhi today directed all party chief ministers to support the relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir even as party vice president Rahul Gandhi appealed to volunteers of its affiliated outfits to pitch in with their help.
Sonia, who is in the US for a medical check-up, has set up a Relief Committee for the calamity comprising the Congress's J-K unit chief Saifuddin Soz, senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and several ministers and leaders.
"Sonia Gandhi is in constant touch with AICC regarding the situation in J-K and the relief measures," the party said in a release here.
Sonia has instructed the various Congress chief ministers "to contribute with all means" to the relief efforts.
Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken said that Rahul for his part has appealed to all Youth Congress, NSUI and Seva Dal volunteers to participate in and help out with the relief efforts.
Senior Congress leaders Moti Lal Vora, Ahmed Patel, Azad and Ambika Soni met in the AICC to discuss the relief and rehabilitation work.
This is the worst floods in six decades in J-K and the death toll in the crisis triggered last week by torrential monsoon rainfall stands at around 200.
Over four lakh have been left stranded in J-K due to the natural calamity, which has also resulted in widespread damage to property and infrastructure in the state.
