Jharkhand Parliamentary Affairs minister Saryu Roy today met state Governor Droupadi Murmu ahead of the two-day seminar on Environment and Development of Eastern Regions which will delve on progress as well as safety of the environment.
Roy apprised the Governor of the eastern states being endowed with natural beauty and human resources and that 65 per cent of the country's natural resources were in this part of the country, a release here said.
The region has water, forest resources and productive land and has enormous potential for development, besides it has a long coast and has international borders with neighbouring countries Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh and is international prospect of trade, the release said.
As water, land and air could be adversely impacted following development, it was necessary that it had its least effect on human and natural resources and whatever happened could be managed completely, Roy said adding, the current generation could profit from development as well as ensuring safety of environment.
Telling the Governor that despite having abundant resources, the eastern part of the region lagged behind other states, Roy said the Reserve Bank of India had in 1983 prepared a report on the potential of agriculture development in the eastern states, but the recommendations could not be implemented properly.
He said the Centre was emphasising on trade with South East and Eastern Asia and ports should be activated in this region, and for this, private and public investments should be invited, the release said.
The seminar slated for December 17 and 18 would delve on speedy development of the eastern region as well as protection of environment, he said.
Several eminent personalities attended the meeting chaired by the Governor, the release added.
