When the accused was being beaten, the 16-year-old girl attempted suicide by setting herself on fire, they said.
The incident took place yesterday in Murlipura area in the city.
Both were rushed to SMS hospital where the girl was admitted with nearly 60 per cent of burn injuries and the man with his leg and hand fractured.
The accused was arrested for attempting to rape and was sent to judicial custody by a court today. The girl is being treated at the hospital, a police official said.
