Jammu today celebrated Gurpurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, with religious fervour as hundreds thronged several Gurdwaras to pay obeisance.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, and PDP patron Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed extended their greetings to the Sikh community in the state.
Attired in colourful dresses, members of the Sikh community, including women and children, made a beeline as they thronged Gurdwaras and other religious places since this morning to offer special prayers.
A large number of devotees across state paid obeisance on the occasion of Gurpurab at Nanak Nagar, Digiana, Rehari, Talab Tiloo, Gole Gujral, Gandhi Nagar, R S Pura Gurdwaras and Gurdwara Bibi Chand Kour Samadh, situated in the heart of the city.
The Gurdwaras had been tastefully illuminated and devotees started pouring in since last night. Community kitchens or 'Langars' were organised at all Gurdwaras.
Nagar Kirtans or religious processions were taken out by the Sikh community amid tight security arrangements.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has extended good wishes to the people on Gurpurab impressing upon them to remember the poor and needy on the holy occasion and share the joy full moment with them.
In his message on Gurpurab, Abdullah prayed for peace, prosperity and well-being of the state and its people.
Calling Guru Nanak Dev as an apostle of peace and tolerance, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and former chief minister Azad said that his teachings will continue to inspire people to strengthen the bonds of harmony, love and brotherhood.
