The Kerala government today ordered an enquiry into alleged police excesses against the family members of a student when they attempted to stage a protest here on April 5 over his 'suicide'.
The enquiry will be conducted by Nitin Aggarwal, ADGP (crimes) and the report will be submitted to the government through the state police chief at the earliest, the order by Additional Chief Secretary Subrata Biswas said today.
Jishnu Pranoy, a first year student of Nehru College of Engineering in Thrissur, was found hanging in the college hostel in January last, following alleged harassment by college authorities.
The order comes in the wake of Jishnu's mother Mahija and some family members ending their indefinite fast at the Medical college here last night following the government's assurance that the accused would be brought to book.
The family had also sought action against alleged police high-handedness on April 5 when Mahija and her brother Sreejith were forcibly prevented by police from staging the dharna.
The issue had rocked the state since April 5 after police 'forcefully' prevented Mahija and others from protesting in front of the DGP's office.
Yesterday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had called up Mahija and assured her that the government would take all steps to ensure that justice was delivered to them.
