The four injured were declared brought dead by doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Tanda (Kendra), Deputy Commissioner K R Bharti said.

All the eight deceased hailed from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, he said.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem and the victims' relatives were informed about the incident, Bharti said, adding that all other injured were out of danger.

The accident occurred yesterday night when the private bus carrying 48 Amarnath pilgrims plunged into a 250m deep gorge near Kangra tunnel, 22-km from Dharamsala, while returing to Delhi.
