Four students of a state-run polytechnic institute here have been suspended for a year in connection with three separate incidents of alleged ragging.
A seven-member committee was formed by Principal R F Khan to look into incidents of ragging after a first-year student of the institute, Himanshu Vishwakarma (22), committed suicide on September 3 after being allegedly ragged by his seniors.
Himanshu, a student of mechanical engineering, had been beaten up by two seniors, identified as Vipin and Prashant, on September 1 and had been told to get a haircut by them, the principal said.
The two students have been suspended for a year from the institute, he added.
In another incident, an IT student of first-year, Kiran, had allegedly thrashed a fellow student, Neeraj, on being told to do so by his seniors.
A written complaint was made by Neeraj against Kiran. After an inquiry by the committee found him "guilty", Kiran was suspended for two semesters by the institute, Khan said.
In a third incident, a third-year student, Ranjit has been suspended for a year for allegedly beating up his classmate, Aaksh Kumar, on the insistence of his seniors.
An application has been sent to Nawabganj police station for registration of a case against the accused.
