The Karnataka government is setting up its first 3D planetarium with state-of-the-art projection systems at Mangaluru at an estimated cost of Rs 35.69 crore to help students learn science, among other things.
The planetarium will be thrown open to the public in January next year, Karnataka Science and Technology Minister M R Seetharam said at the ninth edition of the Bengaluru India Nano 2017 here.
"The planetarium will create awareness about astronomical concepts and help students learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics," he said.
Seetharam said the government is taking steps to set up five more mini-planetariums, one each in Dharwad, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Madikeri and Gadag.
The government has also upgraded the Jawaharlal Nehru planetarium with a modern projection system at a cost of Rs 12 crore as per present-day requirements, he said.
It is also establishing 25 Science Centres in rural areas to popularise developments in science and technology and provide opportunity to develop scientific temper.
Seetharam also expressed confidence about Bengaluru transforming into a Nano Tech Hub of India in the coming year.
"A number of startup companies are already working on how to apply and make best use of nanotechnology in multi-disciplinary domains like electronics, biotechnology, information and communication, food, energy, computer science and so on," he said.
