"I extend my hearty congratulations on behalf of DMK to good friend Yechury for being elected as General Secretary of CPI(M)," he said in a statement.
Karunanidhi, who referred to Yechury's remarks that he had accorded priority to mobilising Left and democratic forces together, recalled the veteran leader's journey to the top was due to "hardwork and talent."
He recalled the Left leader's participation in the World Classical Tamil Conference held in Coimbatore in 2010 during the DMK government where he had made "constructive remarks."
Yechury, 62, a prominent voice of the Left in Parliament, was yesterday unanimously elected to the powerful post of general secretary of CPI-M.
