The prime suspect in the double murder of an elderly couple in the city, the husband of their former domestic aide, today confessed to the crime with the police recovering the looted money and ornaments from his in-laws' place.
After grilling Sanjay Sen alias Bappa, husband of Purnima, the former domestic aid, police today recovered an iron rod purportedly used as a club to bludgeon the couple to death on Wednesday night by the accused and garments worn by him while committing the crime, from a pond at Paikpara in North Kolkata.
Cash amounting to Rs 2 lakh and gold ornaments looted by Bappa from the couple's flat, were also recovered from his in-laws' place by a Kolkata Police team at Nandigram in East Midnapore district, Joint CP (Crime) of Kolkata Police Pallab Ghosh said.
Bappa, who was arrested yesterday was taken to his in-laws' place at around 3 AM today where he confessed to having killed Pran Gobinda Das (78) and Renuka Das (75).
"There he pointed to the locations near his in-laws' house where he had kept those articles looted from the Das household including cash and ornaments," Ghosh said.
Bappa during investigation claimed that the murder was not pre-planned and he killed them after Pran Gobinda had insulted him on asking for Rs 2000 for the treatment of his ailing daughter, a police source said.
"He (Bappa) said that in the heat of the moment he shoved Pran Gobinda against the wall before hitting him on his head with an iron rod. All these things happened in the living room. Bappa then went to the bedroom where Renuka was sitting on the bed and instantly hit her with the rod. To ensure that Renuka was dead, Bappa cut her throat with a sharp weapon," the source said.
Both Bappa and Purnima were grilled at the Nandigram house early today when they broke down, the source said.
Though police have not arrested Purnima, they are investigating if she had any role in the crime and whether she helped Bappa in committing the offence, the source said.
A city court remanded Bappa to police custody till July 28.
Daughter of the septuagenarian couple, who was working in the US, reached the city today morning.
