Reigning Bengali film star Koel Mallick feels disturbed with the incidents of female infanticide and maternity-related deaths as reported in the media.
"As a woman I feel my job is to create awareness among would-be moms so that they can't be so indifferent to their health and avoid any fatal end during child birth," Koel, who has been the UNICEF's 'Advocate' to promote the cause of girl child and mothers, told PTI.
Alarmed over the incidents of sexual abuse of little girls and abortion after sex determination tests, the 'Hemlock Society' actor said, "We the celebrities must do our bit to raise awareness among women."
"Despite not attaining puberty there are instances of girls married off at a very early age which is the fallout of lack of proper education," Koel said.
The gorgeous actor, having earned acclaim for her role in 'Highway', complimented the 'Kanyasree' project in Bengal which eggs on the fathers to invest for their daughters' education.
"If it is unique in the world, a path breaking project, that is a matter of pride, but we must carry on," she said.
"Instead of scolding them we must treat the children coming under UNICEF campaign with love and affection. They should not be reprimanded for any error, but rewarded for every single feat," she said.
