North East football giant, Shillong Lajong FC earned three points at home after beating Mumbai FC 2-0 in their 24th encounter in the I-League played under flood lights at the J N Stadium here today.
The home side took to the ground in confident style and dominated the match right from the first whistle.
Blackburn forward who played on loan for Lajong, Edinho Junior, gave the visitors a headache as he teamed up well with strike partner Sushil Kumar, who himself came close to opening the score for the Reds.
After missing sitters, Minchol Son glanced a header past the Mumbai custodian in the 33rd minute to send the crowd into ruptures.
The first half though did not see any more goals as both teams went into their dressing rooms.
After the break the visitors played with a little more urgency to find the much needed equalizer but lacked the finishing touch and failed to get past a strong Lajong wall.
The home side too frittered chances with Rennedy Singh almost raising the goal margin for his side when his free kick was thwarted by the Mumbai keeper.
In the 79th minute Sushil Kumar struck one from close range to seal the fate of Mumbaikars (2-0).
With this win, Lajong is placed at number 11 spot in the table with 25 points, 10 points ahead of Sikkim United FC, lying bottom in the table.
