The 24-year-old man decided to seek alms after he failed to draw money using his bank ATM card as the PIN number got locked, police said.
Evangelin, arrived at the Kumarakottam Sri Subramanya Swami temple and sat at the entrance with his backpack and sought alms using his cap.
The devotees, though spared money, were surprised at the sight of a foreigner seeking alms and alerted police.
Siva Kanchi police personnel took him to the police station and following enquiry, found his travel documents to be in order with a valid visa till next month.
Police said they gave him some money and advised him to go to Chennai and contact Russian Consulate officials to get help.
