On being informed by locals, police visited the spot and requisitioned the services of bomb detection and disposal squad and Central Reserve Police Force personnel.
"A live mortar shell has been found in an agricultural field at Sonoli, some 16 km from here. The field belongs to one Ashok Patil," Belgavi Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Anupam Agarwal told PTI.
Agarwal said the bomb detection and disposable squad had come from Bengaluru and was on the job.
Asked whether it got anything do with terrorism, Agarwal said, "We have registered a case and are investigating.
