"Officers should live up to people's expectations in the state... Better public service and maintenance of peace and order is the prime duty of the force", Director General of Police (DGP), S P Vaid, said.
He took charge as State Police Chief on Saturday.
DGP was given a warm welcome by the senior police officers and other staff members at Police Headquarters (PHQ) here.
An impressive guard of honour was given to the new police chief by the contingents of Armed Police at the PHQ lawns.
He stressed the officers to focus on the priorities and ensure coordinated efforts from all ranks to bring improvements in the functioning of their wings.
DGP said that crime and drug abuse are the areas, the force has to enhance its capabilities.
"We have to undertake strenuous efforts and curb the activities of the criminals, who pose a great challenge for the force. People's cooperation is mandatory to get the desired results in our fight against crime...People repose faith in the force. We have to live up to their expectations," said the DGP.
"Standards of discipline and interaction with the subordinate ranks are must to keep the morale of Jawans high," he added.
He stressed officers should make frequent visits to their subordinate formations and take on the spot stock of hardships faced by the cops, for their redressal at different levels.
The police chief said that JKP has faced various challenges and inscribed a history of successes which was not an easy way without the collective efforts and commitment of all ranks.
"Our cops are working in different corners of the state in hostile situation created by the anti-social elements and the weather also. Their welfare is our concern and we are committed to enhance working and living conditions of JKP personnel," he stressed.
