Looking back at India in year 2013

Riding on its anti-corruption campaigns political newbie Aam Aadmi Party assumed power in Delhi, the BJP wrested Rajasthan from the Congress in the 'mini' general elections and the country braced itself for the general elections in 2014 as the year drew to a close.
Following is the diary of events during 2013:
Jan 2: New Delhi: For twenty-second consecutive time, India and Pakistan exchanged list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations agreement between the two countries.
Jan 3: New Delhi: Supreme Court upheld the appointment of Justice (retd) R A Mehta as Gujarat Lokayukta by Governor Kamla Beniwal, while noting that the post lying vacant for nine years reflected a "very sorry state of affairs".

Jan 3: New Delhi: Days after she was forced to beat a hasty retreat from Jantar Mantar, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit participated in a silent march demanding justice for 23 yr old girl who died after being brutally gangraped, an incident that sparked nationwide outrage.
Jan 3: New Delhi: Several charges, including that of murder which carries death penalty, were filed against all the 5 adult accused in gangrape case in which a 23yr old Delhi girl lost her life, prompting nationwide protests recently.

Jan 3: Kolkata: India unveils a new science policy that lays greater thrust on innovation, establishing research institutes and encourage women scientists with an aim to position itself among the top five scientific powers in the world by 2020.

Jan 4: After celebrating Christmas with their families, the two Italian Marines, facing murder charges in Kerala, arrived by special charter plane, officials say.
Jan 5: New Delhi: Ex-Army Chief Gen V K Singh's house was a scene of high drama when an army officer landed there apparently to remove a telephone exchange and it was seen by the family as an attempt to install snooping device, after which the Army apologised.
Jan 7: New Delhi: Amidst high drama and commotion over providing counsel for the accused, a local court ordered in -camera proceedings and a ban on media coverage of case of the gangrape and murder of a Delhi girl in a bus.

Jan 7: Hyderabad: MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, who faces charges of making "hate speech", moves AP High Court seeking quashing of FIRs filed against him, even as BJP accused AP govt of going soft on him.
Jan 8: Jammu: In a "provocative" attack, Pakistani regular soldiers crossed into Indian territory in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir and ambushed an Indian patrol killing two soldiers, one of whom was decapitated.
