The US-based chemical giant Lubrizol Corporation has zeroed in on Bharuch near Dahej to set up its first manufacturing plant in India with a view to catering to Indian and other emerging markets.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the new plant, which will produce chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) compunding material, will take place tomorrow, Lubrizol Advanced Materials president Eric R Schnur said here today.
"This plant is part of our previous announcement to invest USD 400 million globally on expansion projects. The estimated investment in Dahej plant will be more than USD 50 million and it will produce 55,000 metric tons of CPVC compound annually after becomming operational," Schnur said in a press meet.
On why Lubrizol Corporation, a Berkshire Hathway company, selected Dahej, Schnur counted several reasons behind the decision.
"Dahej is well-positioned geographically to serve not only Indian market but also to the emerging markets of South Asia, Middle East and East Africa. There is also ample space available for plant expansion," said Schnur.
He added that Dahej enjoys the reputation of being one of the largest chemical parks in India. "Many of the raw materials required for Lubrizol's products are produced in Dahej GIDC, which will also benefit us," said Schnur.
"The plant is expected to be operational during first quarter of 2015 and will have 50 full time and 100 contractual workers," added Schnur, who was also accompnied by other top executives Lubrizol.
Lubrizol Corporation, having its headquarters in Wickliffe, Ohio, was founded in 1928. It has approximately 7500 employees worldwide and registered a revenue of USD 6.4 billion in 2013.
The CPVC compound developed by Lubrizol is used extensively in manufacturing pipes and plumbling products.
