Some Oregonians woke on the Fourth of July to a significant jolt when a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Springfield and Eugene.
Hundreds of people reported to the US Geological Survey that they felt the quake, which struck at 8:42 a.M. Saturday. USGS Geophysicist Paul Caruso says there usually isn't any damage from quakes lower than magnitude 5.5.
The quake was centered about 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) east/northeast of Springfield and 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Eugene.
The quake was about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) deep, which Caruso says is considered shallow.
