A Parliamentary panel has said the selection of members of the NDMA should be done through an open and transparent process, and the tenure and age limit of the members should be specified.
Parliament's Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by M Venkaiah Naidu, said it full agrees with the recommendation of the Task Force, set up by the government to review the Disaster Management Act, that the selection of members of NDMA should be done through an open and transparent process.
"For that purpose, a search and selection committee may be constituted. The Committee is also in agreement with the views of the Task Force that the tenure and age limit of the members should be specified in the Disaster Management Act 2005...," the panel said.
The government told the Standing Committee that the Task Force has recommended that the members of the NDMA shall be appointed by the Government after obtaining the recommendation of a Committee comprising the Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Home Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha.
The Task Force said a full-time member shall hold office for a term of five years from the date of assuming office, provided he or she shall not be eligible for re-appointment in the same capacity. Besides, no full-time member shall hold office as such after attaining the age of 65 years.
