Mangeshkar, one of India's best known and most respected playback singers, was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and the Bharat Ratna in 2001.
Besides lending her voice to over a thousand Hindi films, the octogenarian has sung in around 36 regional languages, as well as in foreign languages.
