Man arrested for raping nurse

A 25-year-old man was here today arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting after promising to marry her, police said.
Accused Angpal Singh met the 23-year-old woman, who worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Mohali, last year, and the two fell in love. Singh had promised to marry her, investigating officer Sarita Rai said.
Following pressure by the woman for marriage, Singh told her that he was already married and has children, Rai said.
"The girl was shocked and had a quarrel with the accused for hiding that he was married. In a fit of rage, Angpal sprinkled petrol on the victim who sustained 25 per cent burn injuries. He took her to a hospital, apologised for his action and offered to bear the treatment expenses and further promised to divorce his wife," Rai said.

After a few days, the girl called up the accused and sought her treatment expenses. The accused, who operates his own taxi, called her to his rented accommodation in Sector 63.
"Yesterday, when the girl reached his flat, he tortured her by pressing her burn wounds and then raped her and threatened with dire consequences if she narrated the incident to anyone," the IO said.
"Coming out of the flat, she shouted for help. People gathered at the spot and informed the police. She was sent for medical examination which confirmed sexual assault. Her statement was also recorded after which the accused was arrested," she said.

A case has been registered against the accused under various Sections of Indian Penal Code including 376 (rape), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation), Rai said.
