"Sleuths of the anti-extortion cell of crime branch arrested Sanjay Shetiyar in connection with two murders," said joint commissioner of police (crime) Atul Kulkarni.
Both the murders had taken place in July 2011. In the first case, Shetiyar (28) and two others allegedly killed the driver of a Zylo car at Shahpur during a robbery. The body had been found on July 5, 2011.
In the second case, Shetiyar and his cousin Shekhar allegedly killed a Santacruz-based businessman here over some financial dispute between the victim and the Shetiyar family. On July 17 that year the Lonavala police had recovered the businessman's body.
After receiving information about his possible involvement in these two murders recently, police summoned Shetiyar for questioning.
"The accused wasn't able to give satisfactory answers, so our suspicion became strong," said DCP (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
The other accused in both the cases have already been arrested.
