Man gets 11 years jail for possessing narcotic drug

A man has been sentenced to 11 years in jail by a Delhi court for possessing 270 grams of heroin.
Special NDPS Judge Shail Jain convicted Mohammad Javed for the offence under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on him.
"Javed stands convicted for the offence punishable under the NDPS Act for possessing 270 grams of heroin which is commercial quantity and is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 11 years," the court said.
"On proper and careful evaluation of facts and events of the case, I conclude that testimony of prosecution witnesses is consistent and trustworthy. The recovery of contraband from the possession of Javed is clearly established," the judge said while holding that the prosecution has proved its case against him.

According to the prosecution, the Narcotics Cell of the Delhi Police got a tip-off that Javed, a resident of Sadar Bazar here, was involved in illegal trade of smack and on April 14, 2011, he would come near Roshanara Road to supply heroin to someone.
On receiving the information, the officers of the raiding party laid a trap and nabbed him with the help of an informer.

During the trial, Javed, who was found carrying 270 grams of the contraband drug in a polythene bag, had pleaded innocence and claimed he was falsely implicated in the case.
While praying for leniency at the time of sentencing, Javed, through his counsel, had submitted that he has to take care of his three younger siblings and there was no one to look after them.

The court rejected his plea.
