Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kharagpur Range, Anjan Guha said Jogeswar Mullick around 47-year-old was sleeping in the courtyard of his house when an elephant caught him by the trunk and threw him killing Mullick.
The DFO said a team of elephants have been creating havoc in the area for the last few days.
A forest team has been sent to the area to push the elephants back to the forest, the DFO said.
Guha said the family of Mullick would get compensation from the state government as per norms.
