A man, believed to be in an inebriated condition, allegedly killed his three-year-old son by throwing him into a well after a fight with his wife at a village in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district, police said today.
The accused, Chaitram, was arrested last evening for murdering his son Shivram at Baboosajbahar village under Tumla police station limits, a police official said.
As per preliminary investigation, the accused was an alcoholic and frequently thrashed his wife Champabai and two children - Shivram and Salima (10) - in an inebriated state.
Disturbed with his behaviour, Champabai went to her maternal home along with thechildren about two months back, the official said.
On Tuesday, Chaitram persuaded his wife to come back and brought her to Baoosajbahar.
However, yesterday again a fight broke out between the couple over Champabai's decision to leave the home.
In a fit of rage, Chaitram took his son to a well outside their home and threw him into it, he said.
"The man was drunk at the time of the incident," he said.
Thereafter, the woman informed villagers about the incident and rescued the child from the well, but by that time he had died, the police official said.
The villagers then reported the matter to police.
A case was registered in this connection, he said, adding that further probe was on.
