A 25-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband who also fired at a police team when it arrived at his residence here to arrest him.
The incident, which happened in Isopur Khanqah area under Phulwarisharif police station on the outskirts of the state capital, resulted in much commotion in the area, Patna SSP Vikas Vaibhav said.
Police had to bring in its Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) teams to nab the accused identified as Upendra Rai. He sustained bullet injuries in the ensuing operation which lasted for over two hours and was finally nabbed and whisked away to hospital.
"Rai shot dead his wife at around 8.30 in the morning and locked himself up in a room in his house. A police team rushed there soon after receiving the information and the man fired at it also. Luckily none of the police officials sustained any injuries," Vaibhav said.
"He had locked himself up in a room and was finally arrested by combined efforts of police, ATS and SWAT teams. He sustained some injuries in the process and has been admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH)," Vaibhav added.
The Patna SSP said a loaded pistol, a sword and a dagger have been seized from Rai and investigations are being conducted to ascertain the reasons behind the murder and shooting at the police.
Phulwarisharif Sub-Inspector (SI) Barrister Paswan said the deceased woman has been identified as Leela Devi and the body has been sent for postmortem.
Paswan said that the accused was known in the locality as a troublemaker and an arrogant person.
