In a shocking incident, a young man leaped to death from a bridge near a railway station here today in full public view, with the entire act caught on the camera.
The bare-chested man with his shirt in his hand climbed the bridge and was threatening to jump even as a bystander inched toward him and made a vain bid to dissuade him from doing so.
The footage of this afternoon incident, telecast on Tamil TV channels, showed the man suddenly taking the plunge and coming crashing down even as the onlookers watched with shock and rushed near him.
The man in a semi-conscious state was seen gasping for breath as a policeman tried to resuscitate him.
Soon the policeman's colleagues joined him and rushed him to a hospital.
According to the police, the man later died without responding to treatment.
Meanwhile, opposition Congress staged a dharna in front
of Chief Minister Raman Singh's official residence here today demanding his resignation over Narange's death.
It also announced that the party will launch a state-wide agitation tomorrow as a mark of protest against the incident.
The Congress leaders were arrested during the dharna but later released.
"As many as 47 Congress leaders and workers, including Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Bhupesh Baghel, were arrested under the prohibitory section, from the Chief Minister's house. However, they were later released unconditionally," SHO, Civil Line police station, Virendra Chaturvedi said.
"The man belonged to a Scheduled Caste community. The incident has exposed the anti-Dalit and anti-poor face of the ruling BJP in the state," state Congress spokesperson Gyanesh Sharma told
