A middle-aged man was trampled to death by a tusker at Banarhat under Moraghat Forest Range in Jalpaiguri district today.
The incident occurred when the elephant attacked Hira Shau (50) and two other morning walkers. While Shau was trampled to death, two others managed to flee the spot, Seema Chowdhury, wildlife warden of the forest range, said.
The family of Shau, a state government employee, was given Rs 20,000 by the forest department, and Rs 80,000 more would be paid to them after the post-mortem report is made available, Chowdhury said.
