An alleged master conman, who had duped several companies and individuals to the tune of crores of rupees by projecting himself to be associated with UNESCO and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, has been arrested along with his female associate, police said today.
Shubhendu Sorcar, a resident of Guwahati and his associate Debashree Chatterjee were arrested by the Anti Forgery Section of the Economic offences Wing (EOW) yesterday from a hotel in Jaipur.
The duo, in connivance with others, had allegedly cheated a number of gullible people in the past. Sorcar used to organize cultural events in major cities and invited politicians, film stars and popular singers in order to impress his targets. He even cheated the event organizers and never paid them, police said.
"The EOW had received a number of complaints wherein it was alleged that one Professor Shubhendu Sorcar is running an organization by the name of National Educational Research and Development (NERDP) which claims to be an International Post Secondary Non-Profit Statutory Education Agency in Higher Education associated with international organizations.
"He used to project that NERDP is an organization supported by UNESCO and duly recognized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for carrying out activities related to Higher Education in India," said Joint Commissioner of Police (EOW) Praveer Ranjan.
During investigation, it was learnt that Sorcar used to run a big office in posh Hauz Khas area here in order to project to his gullible victims that NERDP is handling several big-ticket assignments across India with the support of HRD Ministry and UNESCO.
