Nearly 5,000 quintals of mangoes have arrived at the Agriculture produce Market committee (APMC) market in Navsari in South Gujarat.
Arrival of different varieties of the 'king of fruit' from Valsad, Surta and Navsari has started at the APMC market in Navsari from last week in Saturday, around 180 kilo metres from here, said Chairman of APMC, Navsari Ashish Desai.
He said traders from here will send consignments to markets in Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country.
According to market sources, arrival was delayed by several days due to erratic winter last year and unseasonal rain during last few months in the state, which had damaged crop of varieties like Kesar, Alphonso and Rajapuri.
Notably, storm and unseasonal rain last month had caused extensive damage to mango crops in Talala and Dhari area of Saurashtra.
Experts however, said that damage to the mango crop in South Gujarat was minimal and no area was washed out by the erratic rains.
According to traders at the APMC market, mango production is likely to be less as compared to last year due to unseasonal rains and adverse climatic conditions. However, it is early to predict production figures, they say.
Trader Shailesh Pandya said restriction on export of Indian mangoes to European countries might bring rates down but less production may result in rising mango prices in coming days.
Currently, Alphanso is being sold in range of Rs 400-750 per 20 kgs, Rs 465- 1,055 for Kesar and Rs 425-760 for Langra. Prices may fall after arrivals pick up.
