Mortal remains of rifleman Prabhu Singh of 57 Rashtriya Rifles, whose body was mutilated by the terrorists during ambush in Macchil sector of Jammu and Kashmir during patrolling, consigned to flames this evening with full military honours at his village Khirjan Khas in the district.
Singh's body arrived here from Jammu and Kashmir this afternoon, where wreath was laid by Brigadier M Bhatnagar, Station Commander, Jodhpur. Thereafter, it was taken to his native village in a helicopter.
Markets around the village remain closed and villagers in large number gathered at the cremation ground to pay tribute to the man of their land. They stood on both sides of the road leading to the cremation ground from the helipad and chanted slogans in his honour.
There was a brief interruption in carrying out the last rites, when one of the members of Singh's family demand that he wanted to see the body and refused to allow the funeral.
"But we explained to them that it would not be right to see the mutilated body. Also it would amount to insult to his martyrdom," Jodhpur MP, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, adding finally he agreed.
There was resentment among people over the absence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who was represented by the Chairman of Seed Corporation, who laid wreath on her behalf.
Apart from them, senior district administration and police officials were present on the occasion.
Singh, along with two others of counter-infiltration patrol party of Indian army, was ambushed by terrorists ahead of the fencing along LoC in forest belt in Machhil sector in Kupwara district.
Terrorists not only killed him but beheaded him and mutilated his body badly before escaping to the other side of the LoC.
