Maruti retains top slot in passenger vehicle segment in Jan

Company's Alto retained the top position last month, with 21,462 units

Maruti Suzuki India maintained its leadership position in the domestic passenger vehicle market with six of its models featuring in the top 10 brands in January.

Hyundai Motor India's recently launched sports utility vehicle Creta also made it to the list last month.

According to the latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), in the top 10 best passenger vehicles, Maruti's Alto retained the top position last month, with 21,462 units, as against 22,889 units in January 2015.

The company's premium hatchback Swift was the second best-selling model with 14,057 units compared with 19,669 units in the same month last year.

MSI's compact sedan DZire was third, selling 14,042 units, as against 18,155 units in the year ago month. Further, the company's compact hatchback Wagon R stood fourth with 12,744 units, as compared to 12,861 units a year ago.

Hyundai Motor India's Grand i10 moved to the fifth slot with 9,934 units, from sixth in the same month in 2015 with 8,724 units. The Korean firm's Elite i20 stood at sixth spot with 9,604 unit sales compared to 9,541 unit sales last year.

Honda's popular sedan City moved to the seventh spot with 8,037 units from eight in the same month in 2015 with 7,671 unit sales.

Maruti's premium hatchback Baleno made it to the eight rank with sale of 7,698 units. The company's compact car Celerio was at ninth position, selling 7,141 units. It replaced Hyundai Eon, which had sold 6,820 units in same period of 2015.

Hyundai Creta made it to the top ten with sale of 6,589 units in January.

Honda's compact sedan Amaze and Hyundai's entry-level model Eon and Mahindra & Mahindra's Bolero were the noteworthy exclusions from the list last month.
