A firebrand leader originally belonging to DMK, Vaiko founded Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in 1994 with a set of supporters after he fell out of favour with party chief M Karunanidhi.
MDMK has aligned with parties including DMK, AIADMK and BJP in its 21 years of survival and had last snapped ties with BJP in December 2014 after having fought the Lok Sabha polls as NDA constituent.
