Thrissur-based Heritage Animal Task Force, an animal rights campaigner, alleged that the cause for the disease was mainly lack of proper medical assistance.
Of over 350 wild elephants living in the forest areas of Coimbatore, more than 15 per cent are passing from Kerala forest areas as part of their crop-raiding practice, it said.
Expressing concern over the issue, the outfit has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the Chairman of National Board for Wildlife, into it.
"One of the causes of these type of intestinal diseases is lack of availability of pure water inside forests. The habit of wild elephants to consume cattle food after demolishing cattle-sheds in human settlements in the forest fringes also increases the threat of intestinal diseases," it said.
According to the Task Force, the habit of wild elephants to consume agricultural produces which is sprayed with banned pesticides enroute the elephant corridors also make them prone to diseases.
