Police lathi charged, burst tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets today to control a mob that attacked the Diphu police station demanding that a person arrested for alleged rape and abatement of suicide of a girl be handed over to it.
At least 11 persons, ten police personnel and one protestor were injured in stone pelting by the mob on the police station this afternoon and the police action, a senior police official said.
"We were forced to lathicharge and burst tear gas shells to disperse them. Also a few rounds of rubber bullets fired," Karbi Anglong superintendent of police V Siva Prasad Ganjala said.
The girl went to the house of her reported boy friend and committed suicide after an argument over some issues.
Her family members in their complaint said that she was raped and murdered by the boy friend and filed an FIR with the police.
Acting on this, the person was taken into custody, the police added.
