Prime Minister Narendra Modi tonight appreciated all those who took part and contributed in the auction in Surat of his personalized pinstriped suit and other items and said proceeds from it would "add impetus" to efforts to clean the Ganges river.
"I congratulate & appreciate all those who participated & contributed in the auction in Surat & made it a success", he said in a tweet.
In a separate post on the micro-bloogging site, Modi said "The proceeds from the auction would add impetus to our efforts to clean the Ganga."
Modi's monogrammed bandhgala suit, that he wore to meet US President Barack Obama here last month, was today sold for a staggering Rs 4.31 crore at an auction.
The navy blue suit with Modi's name in full-- Narendra Damodardas Modi--embroidered on the fabric to look like golden stripes went to a diamond trader from Surat Lalji Patel and his son after an intense bidding for the two-piece ensemble on the closing day of the three-day auction.
The money generated from the auction will go for Modi's ambitious 'Clean Ganga Mission'.
