Narendra Modi's remarks that he would respect the mandate of the people of Gujarat for serving the state till 2017 showed that the chief minister "cannot make a dent in Indian politics", Congress today claimed.
Party General Secretary Gurudas Kamat said that former cop D G Vanzara's letter has brought out the "real character" of Modi. Gujarat Congress has called a state wide bandh tomorrow seeking the resignation of Modi-led BJP government in the wake of the letter by the suspended IPS officer.
Kamat, who is in charge of party affairs in Gujarat, said that Modi's remarks showed the realisation in the Chief Minister that "he cannot create a dent in Indian politics beyond the borders of Gujarat where he has managed to win by fooling the people of the state".
Kamat's remarks came close on the heels of Modi's statement that he does not dream of occupying the top post and would respect the people's mandate for serving the state till 2017.
"I never see such dreams (of becoming PM), nor am I going to see such dreams. People of Gujarat have given me the mandate to serve them till 2017 and I have to do this with full strength," Modi said.
Another senior Congress leader, who declined to be identified, remarked in an ominous tone, "Let the BJP declare Modi the Prime Ministerial candidate.
