Congress' chief spokesperson and MLA from Kaithal in Haryana Randeep Surjewala today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on the SYL issue and perform "raj dharma" by prevailing upon the SAD-BJP government in Punjab to complete the canal to give justice to the people of Haryana.
"The ball is in Modi's court. The PM must uphold constitutional and legal principles and get the Supreme Court decision on the SYL implemented in letter and spirit as there was the NDA government at the Centre, SAD-BJP alliance government in Punjab and BJP government in Haryana," Surjewala told reporters here.
Stating that "narrow political consideration" could not override the national interest, senior Congress leader asserted that BJP and the Prime Minister were legally and constitutionally duty-bound to get the Apex Court order implemented for the benefits of lakhs of Haryana farmers.
"Every such step which is essential to get the Supreme Court order implemented in a peaceful manner will be taken by Haryana Congress and MLA," he said.
It is "unacceptable and illogical" to say that the people of Punjab should not be allowed to enter through Haryana and similarly the people of Haryana should not be allowed to pass through Punjab, he said.
