Officials said heavy rain accompanied by strong winds last night damaged some trees and a poultry shed under construction in Erode district. Some sign boards were blown away in the winds.
According to IMD, Mahabalipuram (Kanchipuram) and Vallam (Thanjavur) recorded 10 cm rain each while Kattumannal Koil (Cuddalore) and, Needamangalam (Tiruvarur) nine cm in the past 24 hours.
Tindivanam (Villupuram), Udumalpet (Tiruppur), Mannargudi (Tiruvarur) and Papanasam (Thanjavur) received eight cm each while Kodavasal (Tiruvarur), Kallakurichi (Villupuram), Valangaiman (Tiruvarur Dist), Tindivanam (Villupuram), Kumbakonam (Thanjavur), recorded seven cm rain each.
In Erode district, movement of traffic was hit due to the rains with water stagnating in low lying areas. Power supply was also disrupted in many areas. Kangeyam area received the maximum rain of 42 mm in the 24 hours ending 0830 hours today while Bhavani recorded 41.8 mm.
Meanwhile, a senior IMD official said more rains are expected in the next 24 hours.
"Due to upper air circulation over Comorin area, rain is expected in most places in south Tamil Nadu and a few locations in northern parts of the state over the next 24 hours," Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, SR Ramanan told PTI.
On the rains in the past 24 hours in several places in Tamil Nadu including Chennai, he said it was due to convection which normally follows a phase of high temperature.
Parts of Madurai, Tirunelveli and Theni districts also received good showers yesterday bringing relief to the residents reeling under the scorching heat for the past two days.
