In a dramatic turn of events, Harda Co-operative Bank manager Sudarshan Joshi, who had gone underground last month after being accused of swindling more than Rs 2.77 crore, has surrendered before police here.
In a surprise check at the Co-operative Bank in Harda district, over Rs 2.77 crore was found missing on January 22 after which Joshi went absconding. He was later suspended, Harda District Superintendent of Police Prembabu Sharma told PTI today.
But after 12 days, Joshi suddenly walked into the Harda City police station yesterday with four sacks stuffed with cash, leaving the cops surprised, the SP said.
A machine was brought to the police station for counting notes, which took place for well over two hours, police said.
After counting the cash that Joshi had brought, the sum totalled to Rs 2,76,74,500. Of this, 11 currency notes of Rs 500 face value and one note of Rs 1,000 was found to be fake, Sharma said.
For further verification of this currency, police is going to approach the RBI, he said.
"We have to recover Rs 26,150 more from Joshi with which he had decamped," he added.
The accused has been booked under sections 406 (cheating), 408 (criminal breach of trust), 410 (robbery) and 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.
Sharma said police will produce Joshi in the lower court and try to seek his remand for three days in the case.
