The assailants, who worked with Kamal Patel (45), asked him to come out of his house at Tarara village last night and shot him from a close range with a locally-made gun, sub-divisional officer of police R K Singh said.
When his wife ran out hearing the gunshots, they shot her too, injuring her in the leg, Singh said. She was admitted in a hospital here.
The assailants, identified as Sunil Parmar, Lakhan Nayak, Rahul Nayak, Rama Choudhry and Kanha (all aged between 20-25 years), are absconding. Police have lodged a case of murder against them.
