Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Satyadev Katare suffered injuries while protesting against the MP Professional Board Examination (MPPBE) scam at Roshanpura square.
The semi-nude protest was organised by the state Youth Congress in protest against the MPPEB scam.
The Youth Congress workers were demanding resignation of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for his alleged involvement in the multi-layered MPPBE scam, Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress president Kunal Choudhary told reporters.
Both Katare and Madhya Pradesh Congress president Arun Yadav took part in the protest.
After Youth Congress workers led by Katare and Yadav tried to cross barricades by climbing over it, the police cane-charged them and used water cannons to disperse them.
In the melee, Katare was hit by a water cannon from behind and he fell down, a senior Congress leader Pankaj Chaturvedi said.
Katare was rushed to the Government J P Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit, Chaturvedi said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sriniwas Varma said that Katare fell down and was sent to hospital in an ambulance.
Choudhary alleged that the police used force to disperse them in a "barbaric manner" though Youth Congress workers protested peacefully on the issue of MPPEB scam.
The MPPBE scam related to the Pre-Medical Test and recruitment to various government services including teachers, constables and food inspectors has been taking place in the state since the last few years, until the matter was exposed after a few impersonators got arrested in Indore.
