Some Youth Congress members were detained by the police today when they were marching towards the residence of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan here to protest against suspension of six Congress MPs.
They started their march from the Congress headquarters, the 24 Akbar Road, and headed towards Mahajan's residence nearby. They were stopped at a barricade and later on detained by the police.
Indian Youth Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja dubbed the suspension of MPs as "insult" to democracy.
"It is disheartening to see how the government is openly acting like a tyrant and, even in Parliament, the Opposition is not being heard," he said.
The detained activists were taken to the Parliament Street police station and released later on, said Indian Youth Congress spokesman Amrish Ranjan.
He alleged the police used force to disperse the workers, some of whom got injured, a claim the police denied.
Earlier this week, six Congress MPs were suspended for five days from the ongoing session of the Lok Sabha by the Speaker.
They were suspended for causing "grave disorder" by storming the Well of the House, tearing papers and throwing them towards the Chair during their protest over incidents of "lynching by cow vigilantes".
"Our protest was not against any individual. It was aimed at strengthening democracy that is under attack in the present regime," Ranjan said.
