MQM, the largest party in Karachi, has moved the United Nations alleging excesses committed by Pakistan's para-military Rangers in their ongoing security operation in the port city.
The MQM said its International Secretariat submitted a letter over the excesses by Rangers to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday.
The letter alleges the Rangers mistreated party workers during the security operation in Karachi, and their activists were being unlawfully being detained by police officials.
The letter specifically mentions the raid conducted on MQM's headquarters on the night of July 17, and the subsequent arrest of Qamar Mansoor, a member of the party's Central Coordination Committee.
MQM, the single latest political party in Karachi and a dominant force in Sindh, has come under increasing pressure in recent months after Rangers stepped up their operations in Pakistan's most populous city.
The party's relation with the law enforcement agencies in Pakistan can best be described as strained, following a crackdown by authorities on its activists and workers.
