"We have submitted memorandum to the Secretary, Commerce and Industries Ministry, Government of India, District Collector (East), Chief Engineer, GREF seeking early reopening of the road to Nathula as the border trade period has started but the road is closed," General Secretary of the NTWA, Lakpa Sherpa said.

Border trade is allowed through Nathula from May 1 to November 31.

Sherpa said the Assistant Chief Engineer of General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) has assured the reopening of the road by May 21 and "GREF has assured to construct another road just above the main road for smooth functioning of traffic."

On behalf of the Association, he expressed gratitude towards the government for revising the list of border trade items.

"The fulfilment of this long pending demand of ours will help us in many ways," he said.

The Commerce and Industries Ministry has recently given green signal to revise the trade list. The Association has 130 traders as members, the General Secretary informed.
